Mainstream Engineering Awarded Contract from the Department of Energy to Demonstrate an Improved Process for Clean Coal Energy Production
As legislation continues to tighten regulations on emissions for coal-fired power plants, new technologies and control strategies are required. Mercury and other coal contaminants are of interest due to the costs associated with the capture and disposal of toxic mercury. Mainstream will be demonstrating the technology to enhance clean-up performance and reduce capital and operational costs. Over 50% of mercury emissions in the U.S. come from coal-powered utilities with an estimated public health cost of $37 to $90 billion annually.
Reducing the costs of emissions control and mercury capture ultimately lowers delivered energy costs and environmental impact. Improving domestic production of coal energy has significant benefits related to energy security and the sustainability of the U.S. economy.
The commercial applications of these membranes are immense and include environmental clean-up, pharmaceutical production, and hydrocarbon processing.
