There is a current need within the Army to develop small, lightweight, fuel-efficient engines for power generation applications. One application of this small engine technology is for use as an auxiliary power unit (APU) for the Abrams, Bradley, and Stryker suite of combat vehicles. Mainstream has successfully completed the design of both a compression-ignition engine and a generator with an integrated starter/alternator that can provide power for onboard electronics, eliminating the need to use the main propulsion engine for power generating purposes. Use of the APU, which can deliver 12 kW of electrical power at sea level, results in a substantial decrease in the amount of fuel the vehicle must carry. We are now preparing to perform the detailed design, identification of suppliers, and construction of the initial prototype.
