The U.S. military has been searching for a lightweight, portable water purification device for a long time. Mainstream began developing the technology for such a lightweight purification device in 1989. We have finally developed the configuration for a small portable device that will meet or exceed all the performance requirements of the Marine Corps.
Mainstream demonstrated a radically different configuration for a hand-operated, reverse-osmosis water purifier. This patent-pending unit has four-times the membrane surface area of current commercial units. Yet at 22 ounces, it exceeds the U.S. Marine Corps System Command "Statement of Need for Individual Water Purifier" dated February 3, 2004, and it weighs less than any other unit on the market. Designed for a maximum operating pressure of 1,000 psig and operating between 600 and 900 psig, this new reverse-osmosis membrane has been designed for a life of 400 liters of purified water from seawater.
